During his recent visit, the Pope publicly apologized to thousands of people who were sexually abused by Catholic clergy, and vowed not to let this happen again.
But stopping child abuse is not that simple, since it’s far more widespread than most people realize. One in four girls — and one in six boys — are sexually abused before they turn 18. It’s estimated that 39 million Americans are survivors of sexual child abuse.
Behind the statistics are flesh and blood people left to cope with the aftershocks, which often include sadness, substance abuse and further victimizations.
Dr. Dennis L. Waters understands how they feel. He was physically and emotionally abused as a preteen — but he’s thriving now, and no longer sees himself as a victim.
An inspiring, articulate guest, he’ll share solutions to help abuse survivors transcend their painful pasts and rehab their lives.
Dr. Waters explains:
• 4 powerful ways to heal from sexual or physical abuse.
• Why abuse survivors must find a community to help them recover.
• What churches can do to provide a safe haven for victims.
• How his “8 A’s” program helps people overcome the shame and blame of past traumas and regain their sense of self.
