The nearly 50-year-old U.S. embargo on Americans trading with Cuba has stood witness to the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War, and now the retirement of Fidel Castro. Yet, the Communist government in Cuba continues. If the policy had purpose before the collapse of the Soviet Union, it has long since outlived its usefulness. What’s more, says attorney Jay Lillie, is that the policy the United States has enforced toward Cuba all these years has actually helped Castro maintain his grip
on power.
Lillie says it’s long past time to retool our policy toward Cuba. Invite Lillie for a challenging and controversial discussion on the Caribbean after Castro, including:
• Why Cuban illegal immigrants get green cards and all others get sent back.
• How the Castros use the politics of fear and the economic hardship brought about by U.S. policy to keep their people down.
• How ending the American embargo can spawn the kind of grassroots change
the U.S. wants to see in Cuba.
