As the U.S. struggles with terrorism, a costly war, a health care crisis, an aging infrastructure, high gasoline prices and other economic woes, Americans are desperate for effective leadership as they consider whom to select as their next president. Given the problems our nation faces, what qualities should they be looking for in our next commander and chief? Which presidential candidate possesses them?

Cambridge University historian Allen Jayne, Ph.D., author of books on Lincoln and Jefferson, will talk to your audience about the lessons we can learn from U.S. history and the Lincoln presidency in particular, and how they apply to the current challenges we face.

He’ll explain:

• How our next president will grapple with two issues Lincoln also struggled with — controlling the power of the Supreme Court and restricting civil rights for security reasons.

• The importance of a president’s religious views as he carries out his duties.

• Common misconceptions people have about U.S. history and why they have the potential to erode the freedoms upon which our nation was founded.

• Whether a pre-emptive war is ever justified.

• What is meant by the American Manifesto.

• The relationship between faith and democracy.
