As Americans get ready to go to the polls for this historic election, voters want effective leadership. One of the most important tasks the next president will have is replacing Supreme Court justices who will be making historic decisions in the next administration.
Cambridge University historian Allen Jayne, Ph.D., author of highly acclaimed books on Lincoln and Jefferson, will talk to your audience about the recent Supreme Court decision to grant Guantanamo detainees the right to plead their cases before American civil courts.
He will examine this decision in the context of the lessons all Americans should learn from the Lincoln presidency.
He’ll explain:
• How our next president will grapple with two issues Lincoln also struggled with — controlling the ever increasing power of the Supreme Court and restricting civil rights for security reasons.
• How the Supreme Court is destructive to democracy.
• What to look for in the next president.
• The importance of a president’s religious views as he carries out his duties.
• Common misconceptions people have about U.S. history and why they have the potential to erode the freedoms upon which our nation was founded.
