The genocide in Darfur, Sudan, is at a critical juncture today. After years of unsuccessful diplomatic efforts to end it, the world is still watching as millions of Sudanese people descend even further into the depths of human misery.
Author Eric Reeves has spent the past nine years working full-time as a Sudan researcher and analyst. He believes that no individual of
conscience can ignore such massive human suffering and destruction.
In order to prevent the deaths of hundreds of thousands more innocent civilians, Reeves is calling for Americans and citizens of other Western nations to take action immediately.
“It may seem too little or too late, but letters must be written, calls must be made, and our voices must be heard by elected officials,” Reeves says.
On your show, he will offer insight into the reasons behind the killing, as well as suggestions for making a difference in the life of those enduring horrors halfway around the world. These include:
• Joining organizations which are combating the genocide.
• Self-education about genocide and its long-term costs.
• Voicing support for an international shaming campaign focusing on the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing (China is Khartoum’s chief source of diplomatic help in continuing
its genocidal campaign).
CREDENTIALS: Eric Reeves is the author of A LONG DAY’S DYING: Critical Moments in the Darfur Genocide (Key Publishing House, Inc., 2007), a singular effort to chronicle genocide while it is still occurring. He is professor of English Language and Literature at Smith College.
